🦋 Uncertainty Is Here To Stay. Are You Ready?
What he did in that moment is the skill leaders need most today
A few years ago, a friend of mine was on a plane when the captain suddenly announced, “We’ve lost one engine, but don’t worry—we can still fly safely.” Most passengers froze in panic. My friend? He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and reminded himself: “I can’t control the plane, but I can control my response.” He stayed calm, helped calm the people around him, and later told me that moment changed how he thought about leadership.
Leadership is not about controlling outcomes—it’s about finding steadiness in uncertainty and helping others do the same.
And right now, uncertainty is everywhere. Below I give you many tools and my new course to prepare you ✊
🧭 Why Leading Through Uncertainty Matters - New Mindset
As I’ve shared in recent newsletters, the world is changing faster than ever. Disruptions—from politics to technology to climate—are becoming the norm. That means the old “command and control” style of leadership (where one person has the answers and gives the orders) no longer works.
We need a new kind of leadership: adapt & empower.
This shift means two things:
Leadership is no longer a title. It’s not about being “the boss.” Leadership is what you do, not what’s printed on your business card.
We need leaders everywhere. In our teams, communities, families, and organizations. The more people equipped to face uncertainty with clarity and agency, the stronger we’ll all be.
💡 How to Strengthen Your Capacity for Uncertainty
Here are a few practices I teach and use myself:
Clarify your values and purpose. If you know what you stand for, uncertainty shakes you less. Learn more abut how to do that HERE.
Create or join a community. Facing challenges together is always easier than going alone. We talked about this in the last newsletter.
Practice mental hygiene. Journaling, exercising, meditating—these keep your mind steady. Learn how to build your mental fitness HERE.
Build a support network. Mentors, coaches, or confidants who ground you when things wobble, who help you think things through, debrief and reflect.
Live an antifragile life. Don’t depend on a single job or income stream. Give yourself flexibility. The more options you have, the less you depend on single person/system, the more free you are.
Practice discomfort. Put yourself in situations that stretch you—this is "desensitization therapy" for uncertainty. Try new things that will make you a bit uncomfortable - speak up in a meeting, have that difficult conversation you've been avoiding, etc.
Shift your mindset. Instead of obsessing over what’s uncontrollable, focus on where you can act.
