Is Distraction Undermining Your Leadership?
How managing distractions & mastering deep focus can supercharge your leadership effectiveness.

I've battled distraction my entire life. Then, in 2019, something unexpected changed everything. While traveling to Jordan with my wife, she lost her phone on the plane. I gave her mine to stay connected with family. Each morning, I'd retreat to a small office in the house with just my laptop on an empty desk. No phone nearby, and the spotty internet forced me to disable most apps. Zero notifications. The result stunned me. Those weeks produced the most focused, high-quality work I'd done in years. I'd accidentally discovered the perfect environment for deep focus. The distractions hadn't just been reduced—they'd been eliminated. Back home, I turned this discovery into practice. All notifications silenced. Desk kept clear. Phone placed out of sight during deep work. Email checked only at scheduled times. This wasn't just about productivity—it was liberation. After years of fragmented attention, I finally rediscovered what it feels like when my mind works at full capacity.
🥊 The Battle for Your Attention
Every day, we wake up to a war zone—except the battlefield is our mind, and the enemy is distraction. We like to think we can multitask, but research tells a different story. Studies show that switching between tasks increases cognitive load, reduces efficiency, and leads to mental fatigue. In fact, every time we shift focus, it takes about 23 minutes to regain deep concentration. That means a quick scroll through Instagram or a glance at breaking news headlines doesn’t just take a few seconds—it hijacks our productivity.
Beyond work, the cost is even greater. Fragmented attention weakens relationships. When was the last time you had a conversation without glancing at your phone? Our ability to connect, listen, and be present is deteriorating, and it’s happening faster than we realize.
⚡ The Power of Attention in Leadership
The world is complex, with too many things to focus on at once. Everyone wants your attention - companies, people, news, and social media are all fighting for it. As a leader, your attention is your most powerful tool.
What you pay attention to shapes how you see the world. Your focus determines what problems you notice, what opportunities you spot, and what actions you take. When you focus on certain things, you naturally miss others. This is how attention works - it shows you one version of reality based on what you choose to see and ignore.
The problem is that most of the time, we don't consciously control our attention. Our focus shifts automatically without us deciding where it goes. When you become more aware of what captures your attention, you gain the power to ask: "Is this focus helping me lead effectively, or is it distracting me from what matters?"
🏋️♀️ Exercise: See It For Yourself!
🔹 Part 1: For the next 30 seconds, look around you and notice everything that's blue. Count how many blue objects you see. Blue objects, blue clothing, blue in pictures or on screens. Try to remember all the blue things you see.
🔹 Part 2: Now, without looking around again, try to list everything around you that's red color.
Most people find it hard to remember the red items because they weren't looking for them - they were focused only on blue. This simple test shows how focusing on one thing can make you completely miss other things that are right in front of you.
As a leader, this matters. If you constantly focus on problems, you'll miss solutions. If you only pay attention to what's urgent, you'll overlook what's important. If you listen only to the loudest people, you'll miss insights from the quiet ones.
What deserves your attention right now? And what important things might you be missing because your focus is elsewhere?
🔥 Preserving Your Attention in a Distracted World
Here are some actionable ways to take back control:
1️⃣ Create an Attention Guardrail
If something is designed to distract you, don’t leave it up to willpower to resist.
🔹 Turn off non-essential notifications.
🔹 Use website blockers during deep work sessions.
🔹 Set “Do Not Disturb” times when working on important tasks.
2️⃣ Practice Single-Tasking
Multitasking is a myth. Instead of juggling multiple things at once, commit to one task at a time.
🔹 Use the Pomodoro technique: 25 minutes of deep work, followed by a short break.
🔹 Try the ‘one-tab rule’: Keep only one tab open when working online.
🔹 When reading/working, keep your phone in another room.
3️⃣ Be Selective About What You Consume
Not all information is created equal. We often consume content passively, letting algorithms dictate what we see. Instead:
🔹 Curate your social media feeds to include only meaningful content.
🔹 Subscribe to newsletters and long-form journalism instead of doomscrolling.
🔹 Prioritize books over bite-sized content.
Remember: The quality of what you consume shapes the quality of your thinking.
4️⃣ Design Attention-Rich Moments
Instead of letting distractions dictate your day, schedule moments of intentional focus:
🔹 Have “phone-free” meals with friends or family.
🔹 Schedule deep work sessions at the same time each day (2-3 hours).
🔹 Set aside time for hobbies that require full concentration, like painting, writing, or playing an instrument.
🔹 In meetings, focus entirely on what's happening in the room instead of your own thoughts—what you will, might, or have said. Learn more HERE.
Attention is like a muscle—the more you train it, the stronger it gets.
